Providence Seward Mountain Haven in Seward, Alaska has four Green House homes providing long-term care for a total of 40 elders, plus a rehab facility.
On a recent conference call, they shared their exciting success with medication reduction. Over a 7 month period ending in May, they were able to successfully taper and stop a total of 26 psychoactive medications in 16 of their 25 people on such medications. (Also, one new medication was started and one elder declined a reduction.)
Medical Director Dr. Paul Forman worked proactively with staff to help them understand the risks and benefits of medication and support their efforts at medication reduction. He reports that they are very pleased with the change in their elders’ lives as a result.
Keep up the great work and keep us posted on the sustainability of your success down the road. We need more pioneers like you!
