New research shows that bitter tasting compounds may help people with symptoms of asthma. (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2613876/posts)
Apparently, there are receptors for bitter taste in the airways as well as the tongue. When these receptors are stimulated, they cause smooth muscle to relax, thereby opening the airways.
Researchers say there is potential that these compounds could work as well or better than currently approved medications.
The next step is to work on an inhaled “bitter” substance that is safe for use. Asthma is increasing in the US and developed countries at an alarming rate, including new-onset adult forms. Influence of our air quality?
